Hungary takes EU

Hungary has taken the helm of the European Union, even as a controversial new law that has sparked concerns over media freedom in the country comes into force.

The country will have the six-month rotating presidency at a crucial time for the 27-nation bloc. Chief amongst the issues Hungary will have to grapple with are the eurozone debt crisis and negotiations over the EU's long-term budget.

Alarm bells are ringing in Brussels, however, about Hungary's domestic political agenda.

Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, came to power in April, when his centre-right Fidesz party won an unprecedented two-thirds majority in the parliament, giving him the power to change laws and amend the constitution with little ...

Optimism for new year masks deeper troubles

The U.S. stock market enters 2011 in a jolly mood. In the past four months it has leaped 20 percent, to heights last enjoyed when Lehman Brothers was a going concern. Investors are likely to cheer a second consecutive year of double-digit returns.

What happened? In part it is simply a case of the underlying American economy turning out to be stronger than pessimists imagined: consumer spending, business investment and job creation are all up lately. But policymakers have also done their bit. In November the Fed began a second round of "quantitative easing"--buying bonds to push down long-term interest rates. And in December President Obama and the Republicans agreed to extend President George W. Bush's tax cuts through 2012 ...

Apple vs Samsung

In a small courtroom in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, patent lawyers were arguing over 600 highly technical principles of mobile-phone design.

Should the ability to zoom in on a touch-screen phone with the tap of a finger be something protected by patents? Is the “bounce-back” feature – when a user scrolls to an end image – unique to one brand? And should the design of rectangles with round edges belong to one company alone?

The arguments may seem obtuse – something only for America’s elite cabal of vastly wealthy corporate lawyers. Yet the battle between technological giants Apple and Samsung is something that has serious implications for mobile-phone users around the world – affecting everything from the price we pay for our phones, to what they are capable of doing, and whether we have freedom to choose between rival brands. ...
